Why an unlined masonry flue + wood stove = code violation and fire hazard
Wood stoves produce flue gas temperatures of 500–1000°F sustained during normal operation, with peak temperatures during chimney fires exceeding 2000°F. Unlined masonry chimneys aren't designed for that. Mortar joints crack, clay tiles spall, and adjacent structural elements — roof framing, attic sheathing — can reach ignition temperature during a sustained fire event.
NFPA 211 for solid-fuel appliances requires a UL-1777 listed liner from the appliance flue collar all the way to the chimney termination. No exceptions for "the chimney seems fine" or "we've been burning this way for years." A wood stove connected to an unlined masonry flue is a code violation and a chimney fire waiting for the right dry-wood, high-wind night.
Homeowner insurance policies increasingly ask about wood-stove installations at renewal. An unlined install can be grounds for policy exclusion, coverage denial after a claim, or non-renewal. If you already have a wood stove and you're not sure whether the chimney is lined, the answer is a Level 2 camera inspection — not a hopeful assumption.
EPA Phase III (2020+) requirements
The EPA's New Source Performance Standards for residential wood heaters were revised in 2015 and phased in through 2020. Stoves manufactured after May 15, 2020 must meet a 2.0 grams per hour particulate emissions limit — that's the "Phase III" tier. Older stoves ran at 4.5 g/hr (Phase II) or higher.
Phase III stoves burn cleaner, hotter, and more completely — which affects the liner spec. Higher sustained flue temperatures argue for 316Ti stainless (titanium stabilized, higher temperature ceiling than 316L). Cleaner combustion means less total creosote — but any creosote that does form is more likely to be glazed stage-3, which is much harder to sweep off corrugated liners. Smoothwall becomes more important, not less.

Insert installs โ slammer vs full reline
Two ways to install a wood-burning insert:
Slammer install: connect the insert's flue collar to a short section of stainless liner that terminates a few feet above the smoke chamber. The rest of the original fireplace flue is left as-is. This install method has the insert exhausting into the oversized upper flue where flue-gas cools rapidly, condenses, and creosotes within the first heating season. Draft becomes poor, cleaning intervals shorten, and the manufacturer warranty is voided on almost every current insert model.
Full reline: run a properly-sized stainless liner from the insert's flue collar all the way to the top of the chimney, terminate at a stainless top plate and cap, insulate the annular space. The insert now sees the correct draft, exhausts cleanly, and the manufacturer warranty is intact.

Pellet stove venting โ L-vent, PL-vent, and stainless liner
Pellet stoves run cooler than wood stoves — typically 200–400°F flue gas — but with positive-pressure venting from an integrated combustion fan. This changes the venting rules:
- Type L vent ("L-vent"): older double-wall stainless with an air gap. Still used on some pellet installs where the manufacturer specifically permits it. Not appropriate for corn stoves because corn combustion produces acidic byproducts that attack the outer wall.
- Type PL vent ("pellet-vent"): dedicated pellet-stove venting with positive-pressure sealed joints. This is the current standard for new pellet installs venting through a side wall.
- 316L stainless liner: required when the pellet stove is venting through an existing masonry chimney rather than through the wall. Same sizing rules as wood stoves — match the stove's flue collar (usually 3" or 4"), never oversize.

Sizing to the stove's flue collar โ never oversize
Every solid-fuel stove has a flue collar diameter specified in the install manual. Common sizes: 6" for a mid-size wood stove, 8" for a large wood stove, 3" or 4" for pellet.
You install the liner at the flue collar size. Not larger. Not smaller. Even if you have a giant existing chimney flue, don't step up to a bigger liner for "better draft." It doesn't work that way. Oversized liners cool flue gas too fast, cause condensation, and slow the draft — the opposite of the intent.
Common mistake: installer sees a big fireplace flue and installs a 7" or 8" liner on a stove with a 6" collar. Now the stove has to fight the oversized flue every time it starts up. Warm-up is slow, creosote builds up on cold surfaces, and the stove burns dirty. The homeowner blames the stove or the wood; the actual problem is the liner sizing.

Why insulation matters more on wood than on gas
Gas boilers on interior chimneys often work fine with an uninsulated liner — the flue gas stays warm enough for the short trip up, exhaust exits before condensing meaningfully.
Wood stoves are different. Wood exhaust temperature drops fast as it climbs a chimney, especially in cold weather. Uninsulated wood liners condense heavily during startup, produce more creosote, and draft poorly on winter mornings when you most want a working stove.
We insulate every wood-stove liner. Blanket wrap when the flue accepts it (13x13 clay tile or larger with a 6" liner). Vermiculite pour-in when the flue is standard 8x8 or 8x12 residential clay tile — because blanket wrap physically won't fit and will rip going down (see materials guide).
Exterior chimneys — chimneys built on the outside wall of the house rather than up through the center — need extra insulation regardless of flue dimensions. Exterior chimneys are exposed to outdoor air on three sides, cool flue gas fast, and create the worst draft conditions on Long Island. We spec 1" ceramic blanket wrap on exterior wood-stove flues when it fits, and vermiculite pour-in with the highest achievable fill density when it doesn't.

Common Questions
Why do I need a chimney liner?
A chimney liner protects the masonry from corrosive combustion byproducts, contains the flue path in a code-compliant channel, and ensures proper draft. Modern gas and oil appliances produce condensate that eats through unlined mortar. NFPA 211 requires listed liners for most appliance venting.
I'm converting from oil to gas โ do I really need a new liner?
Yes. Since 2005, New York fuel gas code requires a properly sized stainless steel liner when converting a chimney from oil to gas service. Gas produces cooler exhaust than oil; without a correctly sized liner, water vapor condenses inside the flue and destroys the masonry โ plus you risk carbon monoxide spillage into the home.
I have a high-efficiency (condensing) boiler โ do I need a stainless steel liner?
No โ and if someone quoted you a stainless liner for a condensing appliance, they are wrong. Condensing units (90%+ AFUE, side-wall PVC visible outside) vent through PVC, CPVC, or polypropylene per UL-1738. Stainless steel is not rated for the acidic condensate these units produce. Ask about your boiler's AFUE rating before agreeing to any liner work.
How long does a stainless steel liner last?
A properly installed 2-ply smoothwall 316L stainless steel liner carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty when installed by an authorized dealer and used with the correct fuel. Real-world lifespan on Long Island installs runs 25 to 40+ years.
What's the difference between smoothwall and flex liner?
2-ply smoothwall has a smooth interior surface that resists creosote buildup, drafts better, and cleans easier. Single-wall corrugated flex is cheaper but fails inspection in many jurisdictions, catches creosote, and is not appropriate for wood or oil. We install 2-ply smoothwall as standard.
