Two totally different animals, and the difference determines whether you need a chimney liner at all.

Atmospheric appliances (80–82% AFUE) burn open to room air, and combustion gases rise naturally through a draft hood into the chimney. The vent connector is single-wall metal pipe. Exhaust temperature at the boiler collar is 300–400°F for gas, 400–600°F for oil. These appliances vent through the chimney and require a listed stainless liner on any masonry chimney they serve.

Condensing appliances (90%+ AFUE, Category IV) have sealed combustion chambers and vent through PVC, CPVC, or polypropylene pipe out the side wall of the house. The give-away: white PVC pipe (usually 2" or 3") emerging from an exterior wall, often with a companion intake pipe next to it. Cat IV condensing units do not vent through the chimney — the chimney they used to vent through is abandoned, and often incorrectly, without a cap.

How to check yours in 30 seconds: read the boiler nameplate. 80–82% AFUE = atmospheric = chimney vent = liner required. 90%+ AFUE = condensing = PVC side-wall vent = no chimney liner needed for that appliance (but the abandoned flue may need attention). Look at the vent itself: metal single-wall going up to the chimney = atmospheric. PVC going out the wall = condensing.

Why every boiler swap needs a chimney liner under NY code

Since 2005, New York's Fuel Gas Code has required a listed stainless steel liner on any masonry chimney serving a gas-fired appliance. That includes every gas-to-gas boiler replacement, every oil-to-gas conversion, and every new gas installation — regardless of whether the chimney worked with the previous appliance. The code exists because a new appliance's BTU input, flue collar diameter, and combustion chemistry are almost never a match for the flue that served the old unit.

Practical effect for the homeowner: when a boiler is replaced, a properly-sized stainless liner needs to be installed to UL-1777 or the appropriate gas-vent listing before the municipal inspector signs off. Without a compliant liner, the new appliance cannot legally be put into service — which delays heat, delays the CO, and delays the payoff on the boiler investment.

Draft basics โ€” BTU input, flue diameter, chimney height

Draft is the pressure differential that pulls combustion gases from the appliance up through the flue and out to the atmosphere. Three variables drive it: temperature difference between flue gas and outdoor air, chimney height, and flue cross-sectional area.

The manufacturer's install manual specifies the required flue diameter for a given BTU input at a given chimney height. Get any of these wrong and combustion suffers:

Rough sizing on Long Island residential jobs: a 100,000 BTU input atmospheric gas boiler on a 20-foot chimney typically needs a 5" or 6" round liner. 200,000 BTU input commercial-grade unit might need 7" or 8". Barometric damper (oil) vs draft hood (gas)

Oil-fired boilers use a barometric damper — a weighted, hinged flap in the vent connector that opens to admit room air when chimney draft becomes too strong. This keeps combustion consistent regardless of chimney conditions and prevents overdraft-related efficiency loss.

Atmospheric gas boilers use a draft hood — a bell-shaped opening between the boiler flue collar and the vent connector. Room air is admitted continuously through the draft hood, diluting the flue gas and providing overspill relief if draft momentarily reverses.

Neither device should be removed, blocked, or bypassed. Both are safety features. On a fuel conversion or new install, the correct device must be present for the fuel type. We've caught more than a few conversions where the plumber left the oil barometric damper installed on the new gas boiler, or omitted the required gas draft hood entirely. Either mistake is a safety issue that shows up under load, not on the day of install.

Why oversized flues cause condensation and spillage

The classic problem: a modern 80,000 BTU input gas boiler venting through a chimney that was sized for a 200,000 BTU cast-iron oil boiler. The flue is now more than twice as oversized as it needs to be.

Flue gas from the smaller appliance travels slowly through the oversized flue, cools below dewpoint before reaching the top, and condenses inside the chimney. The condensate is acidic (pH 3–5 on gas). It eats mortar joints, penetrates clay tile, and eventually finds its way out — into the surrounding brick, into adjacent living spaces, or in the worst case, drips back down into the boiler room where it corrodes the boiler itself.

The remediation is a correctly-sized 316L stainless liner: 5" or 6" round for a residential atmospheric gas boiler, dropped inside the old 8x12 flue, insulated per the flue-dimension rules (see materials guide). The oversized masonry flue becomes an unused chase and the actual venting happens through a properly-sized stainless channel.

CO risk from vent failures

Every year Long Island has residential CO incidents traced to vent failures. The pattern is depressingly consistent: aging chimney, deteriorated flue, boiler with a compromised draft hood or blocked vent connector, homeowner asleep with the windows closed.

CO alarms save lives when they're present and functional. They don't fix the underlying problem. Proper venting — the right-diameter liner, correct draft hood or damper, verified draft at start-up — is what prevents the CO event in the first place.
