UL-1738 โ for condensing (Cat IV) appliance vents, not chimney liners
UL-1738 is the safety standard for gas venting systems used with condensing (Category IV) appliances. These vents handle acidic condensate at low operating temperatures — a fundamentally different problem from atmospheric chimney venting.
UL-1738 approved materials for condensing vents are PVC, CPVC, and polypropylene — not stainless steel. Stainless is not rated for continuous acidic condensate exposure at the low temperatures produced by condensing appliances.
If your appliance is a condensing gas unit (90%+ AFUE, PVC visible on the exterior wall of the house), the vent is not a chimney and does not need a stainless liner. It vents through PVC or polypropylene per UL-1738, out the side wall of the house. No chimney relining is needed for a condensing install — but the now-abandoned masonry chimney may need to be capped or repurposed for another appliance.

Nassau County H-license and Suffolk County H-license
Nassau County requires contractors installing heating equipment or performing chimney work to hold a Nassau County H-license (Home Improvement License). Our Nassau license is #H0101570000, active continuously since 2001.

Why a boiler swap without a liner fails inspection every time

I'm converting from oil to gas โ do I really need a new liner?

Gas produces cooler exhaust than oil; without a correctly sized liner, water vapor condenses inside the flue and destroys the masonry โ plus you risk carbon monoxide spillage into the home.
I have a high-efficiency (condensing) boiler โ do I need a stainless steel liner?
No โ and if someone quoted you a stainless liner for a condensing appliance, they are wrong. Condensing units (90%+ AFUE, side-wall PVC visible outside) vent through PVC, CPVC, or polypropylene per UL-1738. Stainless steel is not rated for the acidic condensate these units produce. Ask about your boiler's AFUE rating before agreeing to any liner work.
How long does a stainless steel liner last?
A properly installed 2-ply smoothwall 316L stainless steel liner carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty when installed by an authorized dealer and used with the correct fuel. Real-world lifespan on Long Island installs runs 25 to 40+ years.
What's the difference between smoothwall and flex liner?
2-ply smoothwall has a smooth interior surface that resists creosote buildup, drafts better, and cleans easier. Single-wall corrugated flex is cheaper but fails inspection in many jurisdictions, catches creosote, and is not appropriate for wood or oil. We install 2-ply smoothwall as standard.
