What 316L stainless steel actually is

316L is an austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy. The nominal composition is 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2–3% molybdenum, with the balance being iron. The 'L' designation means low carbon (0.03% max, versus 0.08% for standard 316). Low-carbon content prevents carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries during welding, which would otherwise create weak zones that corrode preferentially. Every seam on a 2-ply smoothwall 316L liner is welded — the L grade is what keeps those welds from becoming the first thing to fail.

The alloy was originally developed for chemical process piping. It ended up in chimney liners because the same properties that let it carry hot sulfuric acid in a refinery let it carry acidic condensate from a gas appliance for decades.

Why 316L specifically for gas venting

Natural gas combustion produces mostly water vapor and CO2, plus trace sulfur compounds from the odorant (mercaptan) and small amounts of nitrogen oxides. As the exhaust cools inside the chimney — especially at start-up, in exterior chimneys, and in oversized flues — water vapor condenses. That condensate is acidic (typical pH 3–5), a mix of carbonic acid, dilute sulfuric acid, and nitric acid.

Acidic condensate attacks stainless steel through pitting corrosion — localized breakdown of the passive chromium-oxide film that normally protects the surface. Molybdenum dramatically increases pitting resistance. 304 stainless, which has essentially no molybdenum, will pit and perforate within 5–10 years on a gas application. 316L, with 2–3% Mo, is rated for continuous exposure to the acidic byproducts of atmospheric gas combustion for the lifetime of the appliance.

This is the entire technical reason gas conversions require a listed stainless liner post-2005 NY Fuel Gas Code: without one, the acidic condensate eats through the mortar joints and clay tile of the original masonry flue, and eventually falls into the appliance area or seeps into the surrounding brick. That's not a slow leak — it's a structural failure and a potential CO event.

AL-29-4C we've installed maybe a dozen times in 25 years — it's the right answer for a very small slice of high-efficiency oil.

2-ply smoothwall vs single-wall flex

This is the biggest quality lever on the whole install — bigger than the alloy choice for most homeowners.

Single-wall corrugated flex is exactly what it sounds like: one thin layer of stainless, corrugated to allow bending. It's cheaper — roughly 40% cheaper at the material level. It also has a rough interior surface that catches creosote on wood installs, drafts poorly because of the corrugations, sags over time inside masonry flues, and fails NFPA 211 for most solid-fuel applications. It's fine for a straight-drop atmospheric gas boiler if you're on a rental-property budget. It's not the right answer for anything else.

2-ply smoothwall is two layers of stainless: an inner smoothwall tube for the flue-gas path, and an outer corrugated layer for structure and flex. The inner surface is smooth — creosote sweeps out with a normal brush, draft is predictable, and the two-layer construction means the liner doesn't sag or collapse over 20+ years. It's the material every manufacturer specifies for their lifetime warranty. It's what we install as standard.

Clay tile relining โ€” when it works

Sometimes homeowners ask whether individual damaged clay tiles can be replaced without a full stainless reline. The honest answer: on a straight-run chimney with only one or two cracked tiles at accessible locations, yes — you can pull them and drop in replacements. It's rare and it's a specialty job.

What doesn't work: re-glazing the interior of failing clay tile with proprietary sealants (HeatShield, Cerfractory, etc.). These are marketed as an alternative to stainless relining. They can extend the life of clay tile that's lightly damaged, but they don't address the underlying problem — that modern gas condensate is dissolving the mortar joints from the inside — and they don't carry the lifetime warranty a stainless liner does. We don't quote sealant relining.

Cast-in-place liners (Ahrens, Guardian, Golden Flue)

Cast-in-place is a cement-based slurry poured into the annular space around an inflatable rubber bladder. The bladder is inflated to hold the shape of the flue while the cement cures, then deflated and pulled out. The result is a smooth, seamless cast concrete liner conforming to the existing chimney's interior geometry.

Pros: works for badly damaged or irregular flues where a straight stainless drop won't fit. Preserves the original masonry as a structural element. Widely used in historic-preservation applications.

Cons: typically 3–4x the cost of a stainless reline. Long-term acid resistance is not comparable to 316L stainless — the cement is alkaline, which helps at first, but decades of acidic condensate on gas applications degrades the surface. You can't inspect it internally after install — there's no scan to verify liner integrity later. And there are maybe five contractors on Long Island who do the work correctly. When cast-in-place fails, it fails as a total wall degradation, not a point defect — and there's no good remediation short of a full stainless reline through the cast-in-place bore.

We don't quote cast-in-place. For the 1% of jobs where it would be the right answer — usually a landmarked property — we refer to a specialist.

Aluminum liners

Aluminum flex is rated for Category I gas appliances only — that is, atmospheric-vent, natural-draft gas, drafting through the chimney under negative pressure. It is not rated for:

The savings versus 316L stainless on a Cat I atmospheric gas boiler are small — usually $200–$400 total. For that savings you get a liner that will fail the first time someone swaps the boiler for something more efficient. We don't install aluminum. If a homeowner insists, we walk them through why we won't warranty it — and they usually change their mind.

Insulation: vermiculite pour-in vs ceramic blanket wrap

Two ways to insulate a stainless liner inside a masonry chimney, and the choice is almost always driven by flue dimensions, not by preference.

Vermiculite pour-in is what we install in most residential jobs. Standard Long Island masonry chimneys are built with 8x8 or 8x12 clay tile flues (nominal), which have an actual interior dimension of roughly 6¾" square. Drop a 6" round 316L liner in that flue and you have about ¾" of clearance per side. Ceramic blanket wrap adds another ½" of diameter per side minimum — and it will rip going down the flue. The mortar joints between clay tiles catch the foil facing, the wrap tears or bunches, and by the time the liner reaches the smoke shelf the insulation is destroyed. It's not a maybe. It's what happens.

So on a typical 8x8 flue with a 6" liner, we drop the bare liner and pour vermiculite around it from the top. The vermiculite fills the annulus, provides real insulation value, and doesn't care about mortar joint irregularities on the way down. It's the practical answer.

Ceramic blanket wrap is what we install when the flue is large enough to accept it — typically 13x13 clay tile or larger with a 6" liner, or on smaller-diameter liner installs (5" or 5.5") where the clearances open up. Blanket wrap is a ½" or 1" ceramic-fiber blanket wrapped around the liner before drop, secured with stainless mesh and metal foil facing. When it fits, it's excellent: predictable insulation value along the entire run, doesn't settle, removable if the liner needs future service. Just don't force it into a flue that doesn't have the clearance.

When insulation is required at all: exterior chimneys (any fuel), any wood or pellet stove install, EPA Phase III solid-fuel appliances, and any install where the manufacturer's warranty terms specify it. Interior gas chimneys often don't require insulation — but we install it anyway on high-efficiency oil retrofits where we're moving from 82% AFUE to 87%+ and want to keep flue-gas temperature above dewpoint during shoulder-season operation.

Why do I need a chimney liner?

A chimney liner protects the masonry from corrosive combustion byproducts, contains the flue path in a code-compliant channel, and ensures proper draft. Modern gas and oil appliances produce condensate that eats through unlined mortar. NFPA 211 requires listed liners for most appliance venting.

I'm converting from oil to gas โ€” do I really need a new liner?

Yes. Since 2005, New York fuel gas code requires a properly sized stainless steel liner when converting a chimney from oil to gas service. Gas produces cooler exhaust than oil; without a correctly sized liner, water vapor condenses inside the flue and destroys the masonry โ€” plus you risk carbon monoxide spillage into the home.

I have a high-efficiency (condensing) boiler โ€” do I need a stainless steel liner?

No โ€” and if someone quoted you a stainless liner for a condensing appliance, they are wrong. Condensing units (90%+ AFUE, side-wall PVC visible outside) vent through PVC, CPVC, or polypropylene per UL-1738. Stainless steel is not rated for the acidic condensate these units produce. Ask about your boiler's AFUE rating before agreeing to any liner work.

How long does a stainless steel liner last?

A properly installed 2-ply smoothwall 316L stainless steel liner carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty when installed by an authorized dealer and used with the correct fuel. Real-world lifespan on Long Island installs runs 25 to 40+ years.

What's the difference between smoothwall and flex liner?

2-ply smoothwall has a smooth interior surface that resists creosote buildup, drafts better, and cleans easier. Single-wall corrugated flex is cheaper but fails inspection in many jurisdictions, catches creosote, and is not appropriate for wood or oil. We install 2-ply smoothwall as standard.
