Signs your fireplace flue needs relining
Cracked, spalled, or missing clay tiles. The classic failure mode. If your last chimney sweep gave you camera photos and you can see gaps at mortar joints or missing sections of tile, the flue needs relining. Sealants and coatings won't fix structural clay-tile failure.
Stage-3 creosote. Hard, glossy, tarry buildup that a normal sweep can't remove. Stage-3 is a serious chimney-fire hazard and it indicates the flue was drafting poorly — typically undersized, uninsulated, or exterior-mounted without proper insulation. Sweeping stage-3 without fixing the underlying draft problem just resets the clock.
White staining on exterior brick. Efflorescence from acidic condensate migrating through the mortar. Common on older, uninsulated exterior fireplace chimneys. Indicates the interior of the flue has been wet with condensate for years.
Smoke smell in the house when the fireplace isn't in use. Draft reversal caused by an oversized flue that lets outdoor air fall down the chimney and into the room. A properly-sized liner with a top-mount damper eliminates this completely.
Level 2 camera inspection โ what we actually check
NFPA 211 defines three levels of chimney inspection. Level 1 is visual, no tools. Level 2 requires a camera scan of the entire flue interior. Level 3 involves opening walls or removing parts of the chimney to access hidden sections.
Every liner quote we write is based on a Level 2 inspection. We drop a chimney camera the length of the flue and video the interior. We're looking for: cracks in the clay tile, gaps at mortar joints, missing tile sections, evidence of past chimney fires (glazed creosote, distorted tile), and structural issues (leaning, missing crown).

Why fireplaces need larger liners than appliances
A boiler or water heater has a fixed BTU input rating. A fireplace does not — the "input" depends on how much wood you're burning, how open the damper is, and the current fire stage. Fireplace liners are sized to the fireplace opening, not to a fixed BTU number.
Rule of thumb from NFPA 211: fireplace flue cross-sectional area should be approximately 1/10 of the fireplace opening area. A standard 36" wide by 30" tall masonry fireplace has 1080 square inches of opening, so needs approximately 108 square inches of flue — which works out to a round 12" liner (113 sq in) or 10x10 square (100 sq in).
We don't install open-fireplace liners smaller than 8" round unless the fireplace is unusually small. Undersized fireplace liners smoke back into the room the first time you build a real fire.
Fireplace-to-insert conversions โ sizing changes
Wood-burning inserts are self-contained sealed combustion units that fit inside an existing masonry fireplace. They radically change the venting math because the insert has a specific flue collar — typically 6" round — and needs to draft through that collar, not the fireplace's original 12" opening.
Simply connecting the insert's 6" outlet to the massive original fireplace flue leads to catastrophic draft problems. Exhaust from the 6" collar dumps into the 12" flue, cools rapidly, condenses, and creosotes fast. Draft is poor, the insert draws sluggishly, and the manufacturer warranty is voided by improper install.
The correct install: run a 6" round 316L or 316Ti stainless liner the full height of the flue from the top down, terminate at the top with a stainless top plate and cap, and connect at the bottom directly to the insert's flue collar. Insulate as required — fireplace flues (typically 10x10 or 12x12) are usually large enough to accept ceramic blanket wrap, unlike standard 8x8 boiler flues where vermiculite is the answer.
Smoothwall requirement for wood fireplaces
NFPA 211 for solid-fuel chimney liners requires UL-1777 listed material. Single-wall corrugated flex, while UL-1777 listable in some applications, is a poor choice for wood fireplace liners for three reasons:
- The corrugations catch creosote. Sweeps struggle to clean corrugated liners — stage-3 creosote embedded in corrugations often has to be chemically softened before it can be removed.
- Corrugations reduce effective draft area. What looks like a nominal 6" liner functions more like a 5" liner because of the increased surface friction.
- Wood combustion produces more particulate and creosote than gas or oil. The smoother the flue, the safer the install and the longer the intervals between sweeps.

Rain caps and top-mount dampers
Every liner install terminates with a rain cap at the top of the chimney. Standard stainless caps prevent rain, snow, birds, and debris from entering the flue. They cost $50–150 depending on flue size and are included in every install we quote.
Top-mount dampers are a separate optional upgrade that replaces the traditional throat damper (at the fireplace opening) with a spring-loaded damper at the very top of the chimney, controlled by a cable running down through the flue. Benefits: much better seal when the fireplace is closed (dramatic reduction in heat loss and cold-air infiltration), no draft reversal at the fireplace opening, longer life than throat dampers because it isn't exposed to smoke.
Top-mount dampers add $250–400 to a fireplace liner install. It's not required, but it's the single best comfort upgrade for a fireplace that gets used a few times a year and sits idle the rest of the winter.

Why do I need a chimney liner?
A chimney liner protects the masonry from corrosive combustion byproducts, contains the flue path in a code-compliant channel, and ensures proper draft. Modern gas and oil appliances produce condensate that eats through unlined mortar. NFPA 211 requires listed liners for most appliance venting.
I'm converting from oil to gas โ do I really need a new liner?
Yes. Since 2005, New York fuel gas code requires a properly sized stainless steel liner when converting a chimney from oil to gas service. Gas produces cooler exhaust than oil; without a correctly sized liner, water vapor condenses inside the flue and destroys the masonry โ plus you risk carbon monoxide spillage into the home.
I have a high-efficiency (condensing) boiler โ do I need a stainless steel liner?
No โ and if someone quoted you a stainless liner for a condensing appliance, they are wrong. Condensing units (90%+ AFUE, side-wall PVC visible outside) vent through PVC, CPVC, or polypropylene per UL-1738. Stainless steel is not rated for the acidic condensate these units produce. Ask about your boiler's AFUE rating before agreeing to any liner work.
How long does a stainless steel liner last?
A properly installed 2-ply smoothwall 316L stainless steel liner carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty when installed by an authorized dealer and used with the correct fuel. Real-world lifespan on Long Island installs runs 25 to 40+ years.
What's the difference between smoothwall and flex liner?
2-ply smoothwall has a smooth interior surface that resists creosote buildup, drafts better, and cleans easier. Single-wall corrugated flex is cheaper but fails inspection in many jurisdictions, catches creosote, and is not appropriate for wood or oil. We install 2-ply smoothwall as standard.
